Lot 4445
Honorius, 393-423. Solidus (Gold, 20 mm, 4.36 g, 5 h), Constantinopolis, end of 402. D N HONORIVS P F AVG Pearl-diademed, helmeted and cuirassed bust of Honorius facing slightly to right, holding spear in his right hand and with a shield, decorated with a horseman spearing a fallen foe, over his left shoulder. Rev. CONCORDIA AVGG S / CONOB Constantinopolis seated facing, head turned to right, holding scepter in her right hand and Victory on globe in her left, placing her right foot on prow. Depeyrot 56/1. RIC 8. Slightly clipped and somewhat rough, otherwise, good very fine.

From an American collection, acquired before 2021.

The pellet that appears at the right end of the exergual line is often mistaken by cataloguers as part of the mint mark. However, it is not; it is simply a nuance of the engraving, probably used by the engraver as a guide point. This observation is corroborated by RIC X, pl. 1, nos. 7-9, examples of this issue in the names of Arcadius, Honorius, and Theodosius II. The example numbered 8fn is like ours, a solidus of Honorius with the pellet at the right end of the exergual line, while the examples numbered 7, 8, and 9 all lack the pellet.
